Leap of Faith - Jumping into the Darkness

*A modern understanding of faith is to liken it to what some call a ‘leap of faith’, to be able to jump into the unknown, albeit darkness. A very dear friend once told me that while he certainly had heard all the various reasons given to make financial sacrifices, he did not have the strength to take the next step - he felt he was being asked to take a leap of faith, to jump into the darkness.*

Just a few days ago I received a similar message that another member had been asked to make financial sacrifices for the Blessed Waqf-e-Jadid Scheme but he’d declined saying he was not moved to do anything beyond the obligatory Chanda Aam and Jalsa Salana dues.

To both, I humbly submit that Islam does not require us to take any leap into the darkness. Islam's concept of faith is far from this. We read in the Holy Quran:

[2:258] Allah is the friend of those who believe: He brings them out of every kind of darkness into light. And those who disbelieve, their friends are the transgressors who bring them out of light into every kind of darkness. These are the inmates of the Fire; therein shall they abide.

This means that it is those who do not believe in God who are moved to jump into the darkness from the light. Allah has told us through His Messenger Muhammad (may peace and blessings of God be on him) that He is the Friend of those who believe and He takes them our of every darkness INTO THE LIGHT.

We should always pray to Allah citing His Holy Words, saying that, “O Allah, I believe in You and You have told us through Muhammad (sa) that You are the Friend of those who believe and guide the believers into the light. So shine Your light for me and guide me into these actions that I am being
asked to take. Show me the path and make it clear to me and move my heart so I may be led by You into the light.”

The promises of Allah are indeed true and certainly Allah will provide light for us in all the paths that lead to Him. He is Al- Ghani, The Self-Sufficient and in no need of anything from us. It is we who are needy. It is, therefore, incumbent upon us that we understand the true purpose of spending in the way of Allah. Only then will we be making the sacrifices that would find acceptance in the sight of Allah.

May Allah shine His light upon us and show us our ways of worship. May He draw each of us closer to Him and those actions which win his love and blessings, both here and in Hereafter. Amen!
