Independence: A word that means much more than freedom |

I am an immigrant to this great country, like tens of millions before me, and I am also a naturalized citizen. The vast majority of immigrants to any country seldom if ever leave their home countries because they want to. They do so because they are forced to by economics or by ethnic or religious persecution. For these people, coming to America and being free to pray and work without fear or hatred is what makes "independence" a word that means much more than freedom.

Karachi, Pakistan: June 29, 2010. (PCP) Sadly, the recent violence against the Ahmadi community, which left 80 worshippers dead at an Ahmadi mosque in Lahore, is not a new phenomenon. Religious minorities in Pakistan – particularly Ahmadis, Christians, Shi’ites and Hindus – have been increasingly persecuted in Pakistan in recent decades. Their rights are routinely violated on the premise that they are non-Muslims and therefore second-class citizens.
According to its constitution, Pakistan’s government and any changes to the constitution must comply with Islamic tenets.
In 1974, under pressure from religious political parties, former President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto introduced a constitutional amendment that declared Ahmadis to be non-Muslims on the basis of ideological differences on theological issues. For instance, Ahmadis regard their 19th century founder, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad as a prophet, whereas Muslims affirm the Prophet Muhammad as the last prophet. This act set a precedent for constitutionally stripping Pakistan’s religious minorities of their rights to freedom of belief and expression.

A few years ago, on a 4th of July cookout, I met a group of youth who were feeling alienated and downright embarrassed about declaring their Muslim identity. "Am I a foreigner Muslim living in America or a Muslim American who was born oversees?" one of them asked. "Being a Muslim and an American is not easy," remarked the other.

حفیہ اداروں نے دعوی کیا ہے کہ اٹھائیس مئی کو لاہور کے دو محتلف علاقوں ماڈل ٹاؤن اور گڑھی شاہو کے علاقوں میں احمدیوں کی دو عبادت گاہوں پر ہونے والے حملوں میں کلعدم تنظیم لشکر جھنگوی کا ایک ذیلی فرقہ وارانہ گروپ ملوث ہے۔
وزارت داخلہ کے ذرائع نے بی بی سی کو بتایا کہ خفیہ اداروں نے ان دونوں واقعات سے متعلق ایک رپورٹ وِزارت داخلہ کو بھیجی ہے جس میں کہا گیا ہے کہ مذکورہ شدت پسند گروپ نے ان حملوں کی منصوبہ بندی حادثہ سے ایک ماہ قبل کی تھی اور اس منصوبے پر عمل درآمد کے لیے آٹھ سے دس افراد پر مشتمل ایک سکواڈ تشکیل دیا گیا تھا۔
