How to Perform Friday Prayers
A step-by-step guide to Jumu'ah: the Adhan, the two-part Khutbah and the two Rak'aat, with the Arabic texts.
Friday Prayer (Jumu’ah) takes the place of Zuhr. It includes a sermon (Khutbah), and the four Fard Rak’aat of Zuhr become two, recited aloud. This guide was prepared for families offering Jumu’ah at home.
In short
- Perform Wudu and prepare for Salat as for any prayer.
- The first Adhan is called at the time of Zuhr; four Rak’aat Sunnah are offered.
- A second Adhan is called and the Imam delivers the Khutbah: Tashahhud, Ta’awwuz and Surah Al-Fatihah, then the sermon in the local language.
- The Imam sits briefly, then stands and recites the second Khutbah (Khutbah Thaniyah) in Arabic.
- The Imam leads two Rak’aat with the recitation aloud, followed by individual Sunnah prayers.
The guide below includes the full Arabic texts and a transliteration of the second Khutbah.
