Overseas Assistance

How Americans abroad, and their relatives, can get help from U.S. embassies and consulates.

Members traveling abroad, or with relatives overseas, sometimes need help from the U.S. government. This one-page guide explains where to turn.

  • Before or during travel, register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) so the U.S. embassy can reach you in an emergency.
  • In an emergency, call 1-888-407-4747 from the U.S. or Canada, or +1-202-501-4444 from overseas, or contact the nearest U.S. embassy.
  • American Citizen Services at embassies and consulates can replace lost passports, provide lists of local lawyers and doctors and, in exceptional cases, help with repatriation. See travel.state.gov.
  • Visa questions for a spouse or fiancĂ©(e) go to the consular section of the embassy, e.g. Islamabad or New Delhi.
